Story: Where it all came from
I realized that all that I am able to do is possible because of where I came. I also like digging through old stuff and putting it together. A nominally self indulgent CV. Here goes:
2008
FIRST FULL-ON CONTORT.COM REDO SINCE 2001
Thanks for reading!
2005-07
TUNEBOOKS: THE FIRST STARTUP
Stepped out for the first time with a big idea. Travelled around the country slanging Digital Liner Notes. Met some big wigs. Stayed in big ass LA party hotels. Hated Apple Computer for thinking their shit didn't stink. Got press, travelled to Germany. Got hosed via a format war between Apple and the major labels.
2002-today
CONTORTGROUP
Became my own boss. Moved back to Brooklyn. Hustled for clients. Took whatever floated by. Salad days. Grew the business. Later on, stopped making websites for friends for $5 and a pat on the back and started consulting on projects for the big boys. Whew.
2001-02
POST DOTCOM IMPLOSION
Moved to SF. Sweated out the digital bad times traveling, learning how to garden, and much, much more.

WORLDLYINVESTOR.COM
Reunited with Lewis, this time burning myself out (for 3.5 days a week) as Creative Director for a really fun yet slightly misguided financial site. Broke up plenty of arguments between editorial team ( LONG WINDED CONTENT!!!) and sales and management (MORE ADS!!! STOCK TIPS!!!!) Made a lot of connections, and enjoyed too many corporate parties.
1999
THOUGHTBUBBLE.
Burning myself out at age 22. I was production manager for a 40 person "broadband content" company during the early parts of the dot-com boom. Everyone was getting rich, while I was dying trying. Singlehandedly built the first Encore!/Starz Cable website. Did lots of fun work for Time/Warner, HBO, USA Network. Feet were wet.
1998
GRADUATED FROM AMHERST.
No idea what to do or what to be. Goofed off til '99 freelancing and convincing web shops I could both design and program. Long Island City era begins.
1996
STARTED AT WAMH.
Thank god for college radio. Started on the 5am shift playing to the nutty folk, ended up running the station in '97. Helped design and architect the new station headquarters. Learned that soundproofing is expensive.
FIRST REAL WEB JOB.
Hit midtown each day to work for Central Park Media / Binary Media Works slanging Japanese Animation on the web. My first real job in the big city - started as an intern, ended up building a corporate website as well as one of the most profitable early-AOL "channels". Worked with Lewis Gersh for the first time.
1995
MADE MY FIRST WEBSITE
I'm trying to get my early "work" out of the Amherst College tape backups. Fingers crossed.
1994
MID-NINETIES
Went to high school. Wore lots of baggy clothes. Started fats277 as an extension of my penchant for graffiti postering. Played baseball. Joined the indefatigable SHARC. Graduated and left unprepared for college.
AMHERST COLLEGE
Got used to bucolic settings. Got used to actually doing schoolwork. Learned how to learn. Played baseball for 2 years, hurt shoulder, starting playing ultimate. Realized I'm not as smart as I thought I was.
1992
NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCE
Brain surgery from getting hit with a golf ball in the head.
1976-1991
GROWING UP
Born in New Jersey. Moved to Long Island to be even more stereotyped. Rocked Pequa. Read books. Lots of wiffle ball, drawing with permanent markers, making up games to play, and thinking about sitcoms.
